黄连
黄连，性味苦寒，入心、肝、胆、胃、大肠经，主要功效为清热燥湿、泻火解毒、清心除烦。清热燥湿，偏清中焦热。
心下痞满，可与黄芩、半夏、甘草等同用；痢疾可与木香同用；吞吐酸水，可与吴茱萸同用；
内积热下便血，可与吴茱萸、白芍同用；心肾不交、失眠可与肉桂同用；治疮痈，可与黄芩、黄柏、栀子同用。
李士材指出：“泻心火而除满，疗痢疾而止腹泻，清肝胆而明耳目，祛湿热而理疮疡，利水道而厚肠胃。”
用量：黄连6～10g
注意：以上一味，苦寒尤甚，用量不可太大，以避免苦寒败胃。
按语：黄连乃泻心火解热毒之品，心火亢盛必以黄连为主，配以清解之药，又为治痢疾之上品，但必须指出：凡痢证必须先以少用为宜，多用则苦寒败胃。
痢疾一证，中医以疏通为主，用之必佐焦山楂、炒莱菔子等，凡一切热证、火证，必属实证为应用。
胡黄连
胡黄连，性味苦寒，入心、脾、肝、胆四经，临床多应用于胆，为清泄胆火郁滞之主要药品，如潮热盗汗、肺热咳喘、小儿惊痫、虫积疳劳均可治之。
功同于黄连，泻火解毒、清热燥湿，医者多习用黄连，胡黄连多略而弗用。
然而胡黄连，若用之于肝胆湿热郁滞之证，其效多优于黄连，我们认为，胡黄连实为肝胆家正药，临床数十年来，每每喜用胡黄连为主，治疗肝炎、胆囊炎、胆系感染、胆道结石等，其效果确实优于黄连。
临证组方有柴胡佐金汤，以胡黄连为主药，为主治胆囊炎之专方，其方为胡黄连、柴胡、黄芩、枳实、赤芍、大黄、吴茱萸、甘草。方取大柴胡汤和左金丸之意而组方。
如胁痛、背胀、心烦、喜呕亦每著良好效果。
清骨散，以此药配银柴胡、地骨皮、青蒿、鳖甲主治骨蒸劳热。《金鉴》有肥儿丸，亦以胡黄连为主，配合他药以疗小儿疳积消瘦。《本草从新》指出：“解吃烟毒”，实为独见。
胡黄连+黄连：清热燥湿解毒。肝胆——疏肝胆、除蒸、治胁痛；心胃——泻心火、厚肠胃。
